A former idol’s painful past has come back into the spotlight, just as he’s rising in popularity for his lead role in a trending drama.

Despite strict content restrictions in China, the BL drama Revenged Love is gaining serious traction both locally and internationally. The series follows Wu Suo Wei, a humble man constantly belittled by his wealthy ex-girlfriend. In a twist of revenge, he sets his sights on seducing her new lover, Chi Cheng — a spoiled rich heir. Zi Yu plays the lead role of Wu Suo Wei, alongside Tian Xu Ning as Chi Cheng.

While many viewers are just discovering Zi Yu, longtime fans know he previously debuted as an idol before transitioning into acting.

Now, disturbing claims from his idol days have resurfaced.

Back in December 2022, fans noticed bruises on Zi Yu’s face and neck, captured in airport photos and online videos. The following month, Zi Yu revealed that he had been physically assaulted by fellow group member Zheng Xingyuan, and that his agency had forced him out without proper explanation. He said he was already trying to end his contract at the time.

“On January 8, 2023, I was suddenly told to move my belongings to Hangzhou by January 14,” he shared in a public statement.

After failed negotiations, Zi Yu filed a lawsuit to legally terminate his contract and sever all ties with the agency.

Now that Zi Yu is gaining popularity, the situation is getting renewed attention — especially after Zheng Xingyuan addressed the allegations in a livestream.

In his response, Zheng claimed he was also physically hurt and accused Zi Yu’s team of framing him. He insisted the two were once close friends and even implied that the bruises might’ve been photoshopped.

The idol group they were once part of, Guanghe Shaonian, quietly disbanded not long after the incident. Zheng Xingyuan has remained active on his own since.
